Why is it Critical?
Some instruments / software are designed to find a close color. This is okay for painting a room, but not for refinishing leather which is spot repair. In spot repair, the color must match exactly or it will be clearly visible.
Many leathers are textured. It is critical that the instrument used to measure the leather surface is able to measure the color despite the texture.
The gloss of leather surfaces vary from one item to the next. In order to properly make a repair, matching the gloss of the item is as important as matching its color. If the sheen varies between the original and repaired surfaces, the repair will be immediately obvious.
Colors vary under different light sources. Two colors which match under daylight may not match under an incandescent bulb. This highly undesirable effect is called metamerism and should be avoided when making repairs.
Spectrophotometers vary widely in their capabilities. Knowing the differences will help you appreciate and evaluate their value to your needs and application.
